Inclusion and Empathy in Asian Popular Culture: The Impact of Anime and K-pop on Perceptions of the Deaf Community

Saturday 24. 5. 2025 09:30–10:30
Morava

In this lecture, we will explore how Asian popular culture, specifically anime and K- pop, contribute to inclusion and raise awareness about the deaf community. We will show how deaf characters appear in anime and how they help foster empathy within society. Additionally, we will discuss a groundbreaking moment in K-pop with the debut of the first K-pop group with deaf members. The goal of this lecture is to highlight how these cultural phenomena influence global perceptions of diversity, communication, and inclusion. By examining these two examples from popular culture, Yuki Itose from the anime A Sign of Affection and the group Big Ocean, we will provide a comprehensive view of how art and music can shape attitudes towards understanding and accepting differences.
